sitemap.xml

A file that lists all pages on your site for search engine crawlers.

A sitemap.xml file is a structured list of all the pages on your website, submitted to search engines to help them discover and index your content. It is one of the most straightforward technical SEO improvements any AEC firm can make.

Without a sitemap, search engines rely solely on following links to find pages. For large firm websites with deep portfolio archives or project pages that are not prominently linked from the homepage, a sitemap ensures they are crawled and indexed.

A sitemap should include the URL, last modification date, and optionally a change frequency and priority for each page. Most modern website platforms (WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow) can generate a sitemap automatically. For custom-built sites, a sitemap generator tool or server-side script can create one programmatically.

Once created, your sitemap should be submitted through Google Search Console and referenced in your robots.txt file. For AEC firms with large project archives, keeping the sitemap current when new projects are added is important to ensure new content is indexed promptly.
